New Years excitement has a lot to do with the idea of getting a new start. Somehow on New Years Day we can hit the Control, Alt and Delete, keys or if you’re a MAC user the Apple and Force Quit keys and magically get a chance to re-boot into a fresh start. This has always been an intriguing idea for me. Perhaps it is because in so many things I think that I need to have the chance at a new start, a kind of rebirth, the past left way behind, with nothing but opportunities, that I will recognize, in front of me.

I was just saying this to my wife before we both headed to our offices this morning. Having had some successes in life, I was reflecting, that there were far more opportunities that I missed than those that I recognized. I told her that I wish I had a do-over, knowing what I know now.  But after she left, I realized, knowing me, that I would just see some things and still miss others and that later in life it is the others, the ones I missed, that I would wish I had grabbed a hold of.

I need to say that my wife is one of the good choices I have made. She puts up with me and keeps me from missing the mark, most of the time. I am grateful for her. She is one of the ways I know God is real. She is no accident of nature, no kind of random occurrence brought about by evolution and survival of the fittest. And somehow God gave her the temperament to not just tolerate me but to love me. I can talk to her about the deep, soul, things and not be afraid of being judged and found crazy or somehow inadequate. I hope she finds that she can rely on me in the same way!

Back to the desire for a new start; There is something important about new beginnings. They are part of the fabric of the universe, and, they are central to the way God deals with us. The Scripture is full of stories of the new beginnings God has orchestrated for the people Scripture tells us about. In many ways God tells us about who He is by telling us the stories of people whom He granted new beginnings. It is very exciting to see all of this as you read the stories and if you haven’t experienced the wonderful personal journeys that serve and a back story for the faith we have in Jesus I strongly encourage you to pick up a Bible and begin to read. You will meet some great people. You will be changes people. Indeed you will be changed too!

But, for right now I want to get to the end of the Book and talk about one person’s new beginning – briefly.

After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven, and the first voice which I had heard, like the sound of a trumpet speaking with me, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after these things.” (Revelation 4:1, NASB95)

The Apostle John was in exile on the island of Patmos when out of the air, he heard these words, spoken by Jesus. A lot had happened in Revelation chapters one, two, and three before Jesus said this to John but what is important here is the call Jesus made to John. A call that had John entering a whole new realm to learn some NEW THINGS, things that he could not have had any clue about. This same thing happened to a guy named Abram in Genesis Chapter 12.

Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go forth from your country, And from your relatives And from your father’s house, To the land which I will show you;                     (Genesis 12:1, NASB95)

Wow, “leave everything behind and go to a place; and I am not going to tell you about it or where it is, but I will tell you when you get there.” I am all up for that, for sure. Bring it on. Where do I sign up?

But Abram went and God changed the world, and changed him too.

John answered the call of Jesus to join Him in Heaven and he was changed and the world still is being changed because, he did go up!

On January 2nd as I think about the New Year and what New Year means for me I want to commit that I am going to answer the call to do that which I have no idea how to do. To go to a place I have not seen and do things I do not know about, as a result of hearing the call of God the Father in my life. I tell you that no resolution I or you make, to do whatever, in your or my power will ever take you to the places that Abram and that John went. None of my resolutions have ever really amounted to anything when looked at in the light of God… It is only what He has done through me, surrendered me, that has amounted to anything! I do not have the mental tools or wisdom to do anything of value on my own. But when God is at work through surrendered me He can accomplish much. And He is about His business right now… Near the very end of the book it says,

And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new…”      (Revelation 21:5, NASB95)

In this New Year let each of us surrender to Him as He makes us and all things new, realizing that the old has to end to make way for the new!

I pray that the New Year brings you insight and blessing from God as you learn your part in the Ichthysgeneration!

About ichthysgeneration

I am part of the generation of those who have sold out "their" lives to Jesus Christ. He is alive and wants us to live as He lives, doing the things Our Heavenly Father, Creator of the Universe and Man, asks us to do. On this journey I am a husband to Vicky, and a father to Carter Samuel Curtis. Our family lives an exciting life telling others about how Jesus has changed our focus and given us freedom and great joy. Vicky and I are on staff at a large church and right now Carter is a 2nd grader. We like to ride bikes, take walks, play at the beach, mess with computers, have long talks, study wildlife, read and listen to all kinds of music. Carter enjoys making up songs and drawing masterpieces. Carter and I are fascinated with the "wild west" and get to "play" Texas Rancher a couple of times a year. Vicky is the perfect wife and does a very convincing act of liking it as she encourages our antics. I have a passion for listening to the living Jesus as he relates the riches of His (and our) Father's wisdom and love to all humanity. By His being born among us, His death on the cross and His resurrection into new life, which we may share with Him, He has provided all we need for an incredible journey. I hope you are excited about joining with us and making yourself known as part of "The Icthuse Generation" on the great road!
