…not a Theologian! They have been with Jesus!!!

theology – the study of the nature of God and religious belief. A system of religious belief and theory that is systematically developed.

theologian – a person who engages in or is an expert in theology.

It is widely held as a truth that in order to know God you must seek out a person whom has made a “life-long” study of the deity in order to receive guidance and spiritual direction.  In some traditions this person is called a guru, some call the person a priest, some are called mutakallam, bishop, pastor, shaman, rector, Rabbi, Pope, Doctor (PHd, THd.)  Whatever the name the function is the same.  These men or in some cases women are recognized as the goto persons for questions concerning God or our spiritual journey. Around the world these spiritual leaders stand in pulpits, on platforms, sitting in the middle of circles on the ground in mud huts proclaiming to gathered congregations words sometimes from God and sometimes not from God. It seems that whether from God or not the people listening take what is said as the Word of God and many sincerely work at living their lives by what is proclaimed. When life is difficult or we have big questions many of us make appointments with these leaders and sit under their counsel. We can be seen everywhere reading their books or in some traditions “tracks.”

There is a wonderful positive aspect to all of this speaking and all of this listening.  All of it means that people, everywhere, are seeking something, and that some, believing they have found that something, are attempting to tell what they have found for the benefit of others.

But in all of this activity the ichthysgeneration faces a huge question.  Is this the way we are to seek our God, our Living God?

The number one thing we must recognize is that among all of the voices claiming the truth in the end there can only be one TRUTH.  The all encompassing and complete explanation of all there is has a very specific and immutable character. If you agree with this statement then you know for sure that all of the various, competing, religious and scientific explanations for what you see and experience cannot be the truth.  But your gut is probably telling you that somewhere there is TRUTH.

To find it who do we listen to?

If you consider yourself part of the ichthysegeneration that answer is simple. We listen to Jesus.  He promises that those whom are His will hear His Voice. It is His Voice that created the world and His Voice that brought you home to His side when you heard Him and answered Him YES! When we come together in our gatherings of celebration and Worship – it is His Voice that exhorts us, and calls us, and inspires us to love and to the action of being His witness to the world. When ever we see division among the Church we can be sure that it is the voice of men that is heard not the Voice of Jesus. When the many members of the body are listening to His Voice and seeking His Face there will inevitably be unity. We belong to The One God through the suffering of The One Christ through the proclamation of The One Spirit.

Each of us must by the very nature of things take personal responsibility for asking for Him, and seeking for Him, and for knocking on the door of His offered kingdom.  He has promised that we will find Him but He has also removed, by His act on the cross, the intermediary between us and God.  Jesus has become our intercessor and Jesus lives in each one of us.  WE MUST RESPOND TO HIM.

God Himself has become our teacher and you and I are our own “Theologian.”  He speaks to us directly. He has sent His Own Son to become Our Priest. So as we call ourselves the icthusegeneration let us all participate in the work of salvation by prayer, and by study, and by praise of Him for all He is, and by proclaiming the great things God has done in our lives, and by pursuing Him as He carries us along in His purposes, and by portraying His life in every aspect of our lives. This work is too important to leave to someone else!

JESUS WANTS TO LIVE HIS LIFE OUT THROUGH EACH OF US.  I no longer want to be merely a student, how about you? Let Him Live in You and experience His life for yourself.

You will not be able to do this while sitting on the side lines letting some other person tell you their ideas about the scripture.  You must do the work yourself. Jesus is calling you to come and follow Him. NOW!

When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.

About ichthysgeneration

I am part of the generation of those who have sold out "their" lives to Jesus Christ. He is alive and wants us to live as He lives, doing the things Our Heavenly Father, Creator of the Universe and Man, asks us to do. On this journey I am a husband to Vicky, and a father to Carter Samuel Curtis. Our family lives an exciting life telling others about how Jesus has changed our focus and given us freedom and great joy. Vicky and I are on staff at a large church and right now Carter is a 2nd grader. We like to ride bikes, take walks, play at the beach, mess with computers, have long talks, study wildlife, read and listen to all kinds of music. Carter enjoys making up songs and drawing masterpieces. Carter and I are fascinated with the "wild west" and get to "play" Texas Rancher a couple of times a year. Vicky is the perfect wife and does a very convincing act of liking it as she encourages our antics. I have a passion for listening to the living Jesus as he relates the riches of His (and our) Father's wisdom and love to all humanity. By His being born among us, His death on the cross and His resurrection into new life, which we may share with Him, He has provided all we need for an incredible journey. I hope you are excited about joining with us and making yourself known as part of "The Icthuse Generation" on the great road!

I agree mostly to what you are saying. However, I do believe we must consult our elders in doctrine and reproof of scripture. After all, Christianity is not just an individual thing, it is a community thing with individual stories making the entire book. And it doesn’t hurt if our elders or leaders have some study or theory of the Word to help us understand what we are reading at times.

I agree with you. The scripture makes it clear that we are to live in community with other followers of Christ. We are to be mentored and to mentor in a continuing cycle of discipleship. I wrote the post because it has been on my heart that far to many of those of us who follow Jesus are not engaged with the Word and are far to dependent on the things they have been told. For 400 years the Bible has become more and more available. It is the best selling book of all time – yet I sense a willingness on the part of many to sit and be taught – without personal engagement with the Scripture.

Personal engagement is what is needed, first. Then community and deep individual and group study can follow and in fact can be seen as fruit of personal commitment.

Thank you for your addition to my post on this subject.
